Shops and Services in Orihuela, Alicante

Within the city of Orihuela itself, there are a plenty of shops, selling everything from shoes and clothing to household accessories, food and home electronics. Along the coast, the communities of Cabo Roig, Playa Flameca, Blue Hills, Campaomor and Las Ramblas are well furnished with supermarkets and such for your everyday needs. Villamartin is similarly endowed.

For those on the coast, if you want a little culture with your shopping, check out Mercado de Abastos (Torrevieja's covered market) which sells fresh produce from the sea and from the local farms. Torrevieja's frenetic open-air market, which is one of the largest in Spain, takes place every Friday near the bus station. You'd never imagine all the goods available. There's also a small market Wednesdays in the La Mata quarter.

Don't forget that the cosmopolitan city of Alicante, and its profusion of shops is only a short jaunt up the coast.

Staying healthy

Spain's healthcare system is one of Europe's best. Most Spaniards can expect to see their GP within one day of booking.

Like the NHS, healthcare is free to all citizens.  So visitors that bring their European Health Insurance Card or E111 can be assured of fast, free attention whenever it’s needed.

For minor complaints, Spanish pharmacies (Farmacias) are excellent and many medicines that require a prescription at home can be bought over the counter here. Look out for the flashing green cross outside the store.

For more serious health issues, know that Orihuela's District Hospital Vega Baja (966 776 166) is nearby. There are also four health centres in Orihuela, including one specialist centre. The coastal community of Campoamor also has its own health centre.
