A Guide to Orihuela, Alicante

UK Sniffles or Spanish Sunshine?

With its toes in the Mediterranean Sea and its fingers clinging to a limestone cliff in the Sierra de Orihuela, the district of Orihuela offers up a soothing Spanish life in the sun and, if you care for it, some adrenalin fun thrown in.

Orihuela's 16km coast hosts no less than seven Blue Flag beaches, each offering a different array of services and activities... simply let your feed sink into the soft white sands and laze your day away, or take to the sparkling sea and try your hand at waterskiing, windsurfing or sailing. The scenic communities of Cabo Roig, Playa Flameca, Blue Hills, Campaomor, Las Ramblas and Villamartin dot the coastal area and provide easy access to dozens of beaches.

If you hate the sight of sand (most golfers do), Orihuela still has plenty of delightful options for your days. Most golfers weep with joy when they see the three brilliant courses on their doorstep: Club de Golf Las Ramblas and Real Club de Golf Campoamor sit squarely on the coast, while the much heralded Campo de Golf Villamartin rests a few kilometres inland. There are also several sociable bowls clubs in nearby expat-haven of Torrevieja. For those who prefer their grass unkempt, there's a nearby nature reserve and a mountainous park that offer gentle walking, strenuous hiking and mountain biking. The crags and cliffs of the Sierra de Orihuela host the most exciting (or terrifying!) activity in the region, rock climbing - numerous routes dot the area.

Set 30km from the coast is Orihuela's charming capital, Orihuela. This warm and historic city is cut by Río Segura and hosts a variety of splendid baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The capital, as well as the coastal communities, are well serviced leaving residents wanting little.
