January
Early January sees impressive floats wind through Orihuela during the Parade of the Three Wise Men. The 20th of January witnesses the Festivities of San Sebastián.
February
Carnival is always an exciting time to be in Orihuela. Festivities are spread over three weeks.
April
Easter is marked with a week of processions in Spain. The single most important procession in Orihuela is Santo Entierro, which takes place on the Saturday.
June
Orihuela celebrates the Hogueras de San Juan (St John's Bonfires), which is particularly popular throughout eastern Spain. The main fiesta is held in nearby St Juan de Alicante and should not be missed. The streets are alive with fire and the crowds are simply electric.
July/August
On the 17th of July cacophonous celebrations take place to commemorate the capturing of Orihuela by the Christian Infante Alfonso de Castilla (later Alfonso X 'The Wise').
Between late July and early August, you must attend the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest at the Eras de la Sal on the Torrevieja's waterfront. Habaneras are songs brought to Spain via Torrevieja sailors who worked the sailing ships that carried salt to Cuba in the 19th century. It's as fascinating as it is enjoyable. You'll hear some fantastic Spanish and International groups and choirs.
Started by the royal decree of Alfonso X 'The Wise', the mid-August Cattle Fair starts on August 15th and runs for four days. It's an animal bonanza!
September
On September 8th Orihuela honours the Virgen of Monserrate, its Patron Saint of Orihuela. This one is celebrated with extreme fervour - enjoy!!
October
The Valencian Community Festival and the Festival of the Virgen of el Pilar are both celebrated in October
December
Highlighted by an evening procession on December 8, the Festivities in Honour of the Immaculate Conception.
