Golf

Do you know what moving here will do to your handicap? You lucky sod! You don't have one great golf course on your doorstep. You don't have two great golf courses on your doorstep! You have THREE! Campo de Golf Villamartin, which is a few kilometres inland, has a phenomenal reputation. Did we say you're lucky already? Sat squarely on the coast are two more top notch courses, Club de Golf Las Ramblas and Real Club de Golf Campoamor.

La Finca Algorfa Golf, one of Spain's most renowned courses, is also less than a 15 minute drive away. The stunning, newly minted 27-hole Mosa Trajectum course is just as near, albeit in the opposite direction. Peraleja, a course close to Mosa Trajectum in Sucina, is set to open in late 2006. It's designed by Seve Bellasteros and should be fantastic.

Bowls

What would life be without bowls? Thankfully you won't have to find out! There are four welcoming and social clubs close by in Torrevieja: La Siesta Bowls Club, Emerald Isle Bowls Club, San Luis Bowling Club and San Miguel Bowls Club.

Sailing, Windsurfing and Waterskiing

Club Náutico Cabo Roig, in the community of Cabo Roig, doesn't just offer a full range of harbour services for those with boats to moor, it also has a school that hosts light sailing and windsurfing courses. Club Náutico Dehesa de Campoamor, in Campoamor, also offers light sailing courses during July and August.

Sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing are all possible at La Zenia Beach (Bosque Cove), Cabo Roig Beach (Caleta Beach) and Campoamor Beach (La Glea).

Sports Centres

The El Palmeral Sports Centre sits within the city of Orihuela and includes basketball and handball courts, as well as an athletics track and swimming pool.

The Las Espeñetas Sports Centre on the exit road to Murcia also has basketball and handball courts.

Although in Torrevieja, the La Hoya Sports complex is actually closer to Orihuela's coastal communities of Cabo Roig, Playa Flameca, Blue Hills, Campaomor, Las Ramblas and Villamartin than the town of Orihuela itself. It plays home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, pelota courts, petanca areas and bowling surfaces. The covered pavilion is used for handball, basketball, roller hockey, volleyball and even five-a-side football. There's even a physiotherapy clinic and sauna incorporated - enjoy!

Rock Climbing

The limestone and dolomite south face of the Sierra de Orihuela has become a bit of a rock climbing mecca. The following are areas are particularly renowned:

  • Momiot (just west of Orihuela en route to Murcia)
  • Pared Frontal (near Barrio de san Isidro)
  • Pared Grande - Raiguero de Bonanza (near San Cristobal Recreation Area)
  • Pared Negra (above Palmeral de San Antón)
  • Pared Roja - Raiguero de Bonanza (near ruins of Casa del Forestal)
  • Sector BM (through the N340 tunnel, near Pared Frontal)
  • Triángulo Rogo (between Palmeral de San Antón)
